Victoria owes more than $200 billion, the largest debt of any state in the country.
It costs more than $24 million a day to pay the interest bill, and that money is paid before a decision is made about keeping a hospital bed, a classroom or a police station open.
Victoria's interest bill is now heading for $11.8 billion a year more than $1 million dollars an hour — more than Victoria spends on police.
Debt of this size has to be paid for. That is why Victorian taxpayers face the highest tax burden in the country, why employers start paying payroll tax at a lower threshold than anywhere else in Australia's four largest states, and why a COVID levy is still scheduled to run until 2033.

Criminal incidents reached 473,262 in the year to December 2025 — the highest since the Crime Statistics Agency began reporting in 2004, and more than a quarter above where they sat just three years ago.
Car theft is at its highest level in twenty-five years. Children are responsible for around half of Victoria's carjackings, home invasions and aggravated burglaries.
Breaching bail is now among the fastest-growing offences in the state. The laws have been rewritten three times in three years. Crime keeps rising anyway.

Every flagship project of the past decade has come in above the figure it was announced at. Across the four biggest infrastructure disasters, the gap runs to roughly $30 billion.
A Commonwealth Games that was never held cost Victorians $589 million anyway, including $380 million to walk away. Morwell and Colac are still waiting for the housing they were promised as its legacy. Elsewhere, $1.1 billion was paid to cancel a road contract — not to build a cheaper road, or a shorter one. To not build it.
Victorians have paid for this infrastructure twice. Once in the budget, and again in the overrun.
None of it happened at once, and none of it happened by accident.
Victorians need a new voice
The voices in the debate on Victoria's future are well-resourced and permanently organised. The people paying for the debt, the crime and the overruns mostly are not in the room.
FixVictoria is a new, independent membership organisation, bringing together Victorians from all walks of life.
Our goal is to make this state safer and more prosperous, and to give concerned Victorians a voice in the debate — not least our often-overlooked employers, business owners and producers. We believe in more jobs, greater prosperity, smaller government, less regulation, and support for the role private business plays here.
We're issues-driven, not politics-driven. We're non-partisan, and we'll work with anyone prepared to make better decisions.
